Orem Property Taxes

From 2002 to 2021, Orem taxpayers contributed $765M to ASD in property taxes, with $428M allocated to the general fund to pay for school operations, and $337M used to build new schools and pay off bond debt. Orem schools only received $163M in bond allocations for capital improvements.

Close to $70 Million of Orem's Property Taxes are given to Alpine School District to maintain and ensure our students' education each year.

In the last 20 years, approximately $174M of Orem taxes subsidized the building of schools outside of Orem.

Alpine School Board Members have stated there will be a Bond every four years - if Orem stays with Alpine School District, there will be a guaranteed tax increase every four years through school Bonds. As voters we agree to a tax increase when we vote YES to a bond. A new bond equals a tax increase. A bond is a debt that voters must pay back. Once you pay off a bond, taxpayers should see a tax deduction, UNLESS another bond (debt) is taken out.

Take a look at our tax increase over the past 20 years. Orem’s taxes have steadily increase 8.2% annually! That’s a 165% Tax increase from Alpine School District!

On May 10, 2022, during its work meeting, the Alpine School Board discussed the issuance of a new $595 million dollar bond, or approximately $600 million dollars. This bond (Prop 1) will also appear on the same ballot as the Orem School District (Prop 2). There are several likely scenarios that may occur and that could negatively impact Orem. If the $595 million bond passes and if the proposed Orem School District measure fails, Orem residents would be responsible for approximately $116 million of the $595M bond to be paid over the next 20 years ($595 million bond x 19.44%). Alpine School District has announced Orem will get 2 multi purpose room, one for Mountain View, and one for Timpanogos High schools for a total of $20 Million.

So let’s be clear. Orem will pay approximately 20% of the $595 Million Dollar bond - that is $116 Million and possibly get $20 Million in multi purpose rooms in return. That is just 3% return on our 20% payout.

Now what are the possibilities if Orem becomes a School District? For starters we will not have to fund schools in 13 other cities, rather all of our tax payer dollars will stay in Orem to benefit our children. Another great option - a possible tax deduction!

An Orem School District would allow you to VOTE and decide what is best for just Orem Schools and Students. You would have 7 Board Members who would represent ALL of Orem’s Tax Payers and the needs of our residents.

Alpine School District Current Debt Obligations

ASD’s outstanding debt is currently $538 million for the year ending June 30, 2022. Orem property owner’s share of the existing debt is approximately $105 million. The City of Orem has 19.44% of the property value in the Alpine School District ($9.7 billion estimated taxable value divided by Alpine’s $49.9 billion estimated taxable value).

Orem has funded the majority of past bonds and has yet to receive that same return back. In Fact, over 70% of your property taxes are currently going to Alpine School District! When will Orem see a return on that investment?

$174 Million of Orem’s tax dollars have funded city schools over the last 20 years. You can view Orem’s Tax contributions to Alpine School District in ASD’s RDA Report. You can also, review Alpine School Districts Annual Budget reports for more information as well.

It’s time for Orem to help Orem students, residents, and tax payers. It’s time for an Orem School District.

Vote Yes for Prop 2!
